Today’s modern homes are not necessarily BIG homes. With the downturn in the U.S. economy over the last five years, many people have sold their larger homes, especially after the kids leave for college, in favor of purchasing smaller homes with less upkeep. In fact, according to a study from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) shows that builders surveyed expect homes “to average 2,152 square feet in 2015, 10 percent smaller than the average size of single-family homes started in the first three quarters of 2010.”
Another trend is the “vanishing formal living room.” To save on square footage, the living room is now on the endangered list and 52 percent of builders expect that the living room of the future will be probably vanish and instead will merge with other spaces in the home by the year 2015. Ultimately, 30 percent said it will vanish entirely.
It seems like the recession has made an impression on today’s home buyers, many of whom want less space and less maintenance.
